The Circumstances of His Death

John O'Brien, the author of the novel Leaving Las Vegas, died on April 10, 1994, at the age of 40.

He died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at his apartment in Beverly Hills.

The suicide came two weeks after he learned that he had HIV.
