Supreme Court Invalidates Biden's Student Loan Forgiveness Plan
Biden's Plan Ruled Unlawful
The Supreme Court has struck down President Biden's plan to discharge federal student loan debt for tens of millions of Americans. In a 6-3 ruling on Friday, the Court held that the administration had overstepped its authority with the plan.
Administration's Arguments Rejected
The Biden administration had argued that it had the authority to forgive student loans under the Higher Education Relief Opportunities for Students (HEROES) Act of 2003, which gives the Secretary of Education broad authority to waive or modify student loans in connection with a national emergency.
However, the Court rejected the administration's arguments, ruling that the HEROES Act does not provide the authority to forgive student loans on a mass scale. The Court also held that the program was unconstitutional because it was not authorized by Congress.
Stinging Defeat for Biden
The Supreme Court's ruling represents a stinging defeat for President Biden, who had made student loan forgiveness a key campaign promise. The decision is also a major setback for millions of Americans who were hoping to have their student loan debt discharged.
